Overview
Codeium (founded as Exafunction and later branded Windsurf) was a Mountain View AI developer-tools company that built generative-AI coding assistance, then an agentic IDE. In July 2025, Google hired the founders and part of the R&D team and licensed technology, while Cognition agreed to acquire the remaining Windsurf business. By 2026, Windsurf has been repositioned as Devin Desktop under Cognition, so Codeium is best understood as a historical company/brand rather than an independent operating startup.
